If you have struggled with your lap band, you need to know that you are not alone, and it’s not your fault.
Unfortunately the adjustable band is not for everyone. Whether it is the Lap-Band or the Realize band, sometimes the band ‘just doesn’t work’. Sometimes the problem is with the band itself or the anatomic location of the band. Other patients just need to have their band adjusted properly to get back on track. The doctors of BMI of Texas understand this.
Every week we see patients from other practices across the state and the nation who are not achieving or maintaining adequate weight loss after band surgery. We have a specialized system to evaluate your band and determine what needs to be done to get you to your goal.
The first step is to undergo a fluoroscopic evaluation in our office. At BMI of Texas, we have a state-of-the-art fluoroscopic machine whereby we can examine how you swallow, what the band looks like, the position of the band, the port position, and how tight your band is. Furthermore, we can learn a lot about how you eat and if your eating behaviors are affecting the outcome of your weight loss. In many cases we can solve your problem on the spot with a personalized adjustment. We will also get you access to our metabolic management staff including our bariatrician Dr. Jenny Seger and our dietitian Jennifer Bowling.
When the band fails there are several options. Option #1 is to remove the band. Option #2 is to revise the position of the band. In other words, to surgically re-position the band if it is in an ‘unfavorable position’ or if you have a ‘muffin-top.’ Option #3 is to convert the band operation into another weight loss surgery operation, such as the Sleeve Gastrectomy or the Roux Y Gastric Bypass. Your best option will be detailed by one of our expert bariatric surgeons.
